Arrival of Optogear's Glass Lathe at the FAMES Lab

Wednesday, March 14, 2018

The operating glass lathe

Our lab has received a glass lathe customized for multimaterial glass-based preform fabrication. Specifically, it enables a creation of preforms with internal electronic and optical features that will serve as building blocks in fibers devices, which, integrated into fabrics, will impart them the sensing and transduction capabilities. The lathe is designed to encapsulate core materials under high vacuum for minimizing an exposure to oxidation at elevated temperatures during the draw.
